Cross Sectioning

During the course of component authentication, it is sometimes necessary to cross section the leads of a component. Counterfeiters will extend the leads of used components by butt-welding two types of lead base material then replating the entire set of leads so they appear new and unused. The goal of performing a cross section is to expose the internal features of the leads to determine if a extension was ever made. In addition, cross sectioning allows technicians to inspection the grain texture of the base material to confirm it is homogenous.
